Chapter 24 - Never Alone

As with the others, my cultivation circle with Lian ended when she could no longer handle any more purified and concentrated mana. She made even greater gains than Elu or Kumo had in terms of compressing her mana. I reasoned that this was likely because she was exceptionally organized and had the most pristine channels I’d ever seen.

We went inside the house, and I let her bathe first. It was another one of those moments where she offered it to me and was taken aback when I told her that she could go first. Women, especially female cultivators, had gotten a really raw deal in this realm.

I’d visited Sergeant Rainer’s home, had eaten with Deason’s family, and had seen how Clyde and Gessie interacted. Each of those relationships was much closer to what I was used to, similar to how things had been back on Earth. There was still a bit of a 1950s vibe to their sometimes stiff and overly polite interactions, but it was nothing like the way the cultivators were.

That convinced me that it wasn’t so much a Divided Realms thing, as it was a cultivator thing.

The funniest part happened right after I insisted that she should take a bath first. Growing flustered, her face turned so red that I asked if she was okay.

“Uh… yes, husband. I’m sorry. I just realized that you probably want to take a bath with me. I… I, uh… I hadn’t thought of that before. I apologize and will prepare myself for you…”

I shook my head. “No, Lian, that’s not what I meant. I mean, do I want to see you naked? Damn straight, I do. But you need to understand than I’m not going to impose on you. If it happens, it will happen in its own time, and only when you are ready and want to reveal your beauty to me.”

She just stood there, mouth slightly agape.

“Tonight,” I continued, “I just want to take a bath, after you are done, and go to bed. You three gave me quite the work-out today—on top of me nearly shattering my foundations.”

Elu snorted softly from where she sat at the table. “That part isn’t just on you. I’ve discussed it with Shikumo and realized that you probably felt like you had no choice at the time—which is on us as much as it is on you.”

She ducked her head, red locks falling forward and half hiding her face.

“It is our duty not just to be your anchors, but to protect and train you until you are strong enough to stand on your own. To that end, we have decided that one of us will be with you at all times from now on.”

She raised her head and stared at me with a challenge in her gaze. “That is, unless you are going to revoke your previous statement and have decided that we are not fit to stand beside you.”

I rolled my eyes, though part of me knew I had this coming.
